Celebrating Sanctuary 2009

2009 was a landmark year for Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham. We developed our music programme to include new acts and collaborations between musicians from refugee and other communities, extended the festival programme and brought even more people together to celebrate the tradition of offering sanctuary in the UK to people fleeing persecution in other parts of the worlds. Many thanks are due to the following funders and financial contributors:

Arts Council England
Barrow Cadbury Trust
Birmingham City Council Inclusion Unit
The Children’s Society
Birmingham City Council Extended Learning Project
PRS for Music Foundation

2009 saw Celebrating Sanctuary presenting a successful series of music club nights, putting on a new family event at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens, bringing our schools festival back to the city centre, and of course running the annual Refugee Week launch event on Victoria and Chamberlain Squares.

As well as bringing an exciting programme of events to new and existing audiences, we’ve been working really hard behind the scenes to develop and improve Celebrating Sanctuary Birmingham as an organisation, to make our activities more sustainable and to improve contact with our audience and participants. There is a huge amount to do in 2010, with plans to redevelop our brand and website, restructure the organisation, and involve more people more actively in the planning and delivery of our events.
